A Introduction of Ningbo

    Ningbo, or “Yong” in short, is located in the middle of the coastline of the Chinese Mainland and in the South of the Yangtze River Delta.
    With the discovery of Hemudu Neolithic Site, the history of Ningbo can be traced back to 7,000 years ago. Currently, the City of Ningbo has six districts, three county-level cities and two counties under jurisdiction. The spirit of the city is “honest, pragmatic, open and creative”.

Great Port in the East

    Ningbo ,to the south of the Yangtze River, has developed from a small port. It was the end of the Grand Canal and the starting point of the Silk Road on the sea. Looking back into the history, people could see that the port has played a crucial role in the development of the city.
    At present, Ningbo, with its unique geographic advantage, continues its legendary story through building an international key port and developing its marine economy.

Ningbo port 

    Ningbo Port has developed into a multifunctional and comprehensive modern deep-water port covering inland, estuary and sea harbors. It is a major transit and storage centre for container, ore, crude oil and liquid chemicals in Chinese Mainland. It also acts as a key logistic base for coal, grain and other bulk goods in East China. 

Commercial Metropolis

   There is no market without a businessman from Ningbo. Ningbo has been a renowned commercial city from time immemorial. Today, Ningbo, the old commercial city, displays its vigor again and becomes a highlight in the south of the Yangtze River Delta. 

Land of Culture 

East Zhejiang Culture

    Founded in 1566 by Fan Qin, an undersecretary of Ministry of Defense in the Ming Dynasty, Tianyige is the oldest existing library in China with a collection of over 300,000 volumes of antique books. Thanks to the Strict rules of protecting books set by Fan Qin and obeyed by his precedents generation, the library has stood against vicissitudes in the past four centuries and contributes a lot to the cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. Ningbo thus earns the reputation as City of Books in Southern China.
    The east Zhejiang academic culture in the Ming and Qing Dynasties represented by Wang Yangming and Huang Zongxi has earned Ningbo a unique position in the development of traditional culture of China and the world as a whole. All of Wang Yangming and Huang Zongxi’s thoughts are nurtured by the unique culture and geographical environment of Ningbo. Creative thinking, pragmatism, entrepreneurship and many other enlightening thoughts have attributed to the evolution of Chinese society in modern times. 

Cultural Heritage 

    As a Famous and Historic City, Ningbo boasts abundant cultural heritages. So far, there are 1,530 cultural relics preservation sites, among which 31 are of national level. Three local towns—Cicheng, Shipu and Qiantong—have titled as National Famous Town for History and Culture. 261 municipal level or above intangible cultural heritages inheritors have been selected, among which nine are of national level. Ningbo ranks high among all Chinese cities in terms of the quantity and quality of the cultural heritages. 

City of Harmony 

    Ningbo is a city with favorable living conditions and as well-established safety net. Employment relief and social security organizations are accessible in all residential communities in the urban area. Ningbo is a city of harmony. The number of registered volunteers has exceeded 359,000. Ningbo is a city loved by people living in it. It has been awarded “ Top Ten Happiest Cities in China” for three years consecutively. 

Modern Metropolis

    According to the Guidelines on Accelerating Modern Metropolis Building (2011-2015), Ningbo will shift its emphasis on urban development strategy to upgrading the urban functions and improving development quality. The goal is to build Ningbo into an international port city with reasonable spatial layout and allocation of resources, a complete range of urban functions, sound urban infrastructure and eco-environment and a place that is suitable for living and starting up business. By 2015, the built-up area in the downtown of Ningbo is to exceed 300 km2 with an urbanization rate of 70%. 

Blueprint for the Future

    When the State Council approved Ningbo’s Overall Planning (2006-2020), Ningbo is positioned as an important port city in the Southeast China, the economic center in the southern rim of Yangtze River Delta and a national –level historic and cultural city.
    In 2010, the Regional Planning for the Yangtze River Delta made it clear that Ningbo is to be built into an advanced manufacturing base, a modern logistics hub and an international port.  In 2011, Zhejiang Marine Economy Development Plan got official approval. Since then, Ningbo has been at the heart of this important plan. According to preliminary statistics, the GDP of Ningbo in 2013 stood at US$ 117.4 billion, up 7.8% year-on-year. Local fiscal revenue amounted to US$ 13.1 billion, up 9.2% year-on-year.
    Indubitably, Ningbo will embrace an even brighter future.

Demonstration Development Zone

    As a relatively developed coastal city, Ningbo, after three decades of rapid development since the reform and opening-up, has achieved initial the building and has begun to aiming higher-to complete the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects. The 12th Municipal Party Congress set the medium-term targets for 2016, namely to build the city into a modern international port, to complete modernization drive ahead of schedule, and to set up a demonstration s\development zone featuring quality economic growth, high living standards, good environment in both urban and rural areas and social harmony.
